The 3rd quarter water bills normally mailed on September 15th were not mailed until October 19th due to a compatibility issue with new software. Some residents who received new meters had sensors on the outside of their homes where the readings obtained each quarter were running slower than the inside meter. These residents received large bills because they were charged for the difference between the sensor and the inside meter for unbilled usage, plus the usage from the new meter. This bill also covered a longer period of 14 weeks, June 1 – September 14th. The water/sewer department received numerous calls and many came in person to discuss their water bills. The water/sewer department returned calls as quickly as possible, reviewed account history and where credits were available, reduced the bills appropriately. For example, minimum usage is 1000 cuft, the resident is billed for 1000 cuft whether they use 1000 cuft or 600 cuft. If a resident used 600 cuft for a quarter, a credit of 400 cuft was applied towards the 3rd quarter bill and for each quarter for the prior six years.
The Town of Fishkill understands the hardship this has placed on some residents. Therefore, the Water Department, Comptroller and Supervisor LaColla recommended to the Town Board to suspend penalties for the 3rd and 4th quarter billing cycles and was approved at the Town Board meeting on Wednesday, November 7th. Additionally, residents will also have one year to pay the balance prior to any unpaid portion being levied to the 2020 taxes. Although, any new charges in 2019 will be assessed a late fee if not paid by the due date identified on the bill.
The 4th quarter bill for the period September 15th – November 30th will be a shorter billing period of 10 weeks. Normal billing periods will resume with the 1st quarter billing 2019.
