- The Hudson River Greenway is a unique state agency created in 1991 to assist with the development of a voluntary regional strategy for preserving scenic, natural, historic, cultural and recreational resources while encouraging compatible economic development and maintaining the tradition of home rule for land use decision making.
- In 2005, the Town asked the Fishkill Environmental Advisor Board for recommendations for trail opportunities in order to connect the community with nature in a healthful and inspiring way. The Hudson River Trail was one of their recommendations.
- The Fishkill Hudson River Trail is the section of this project that will connect the Town of Wappinger (to the North) to Beacon (to the South). The trail is also planned connect to the Beacon Train Station and is proposed to have a spur with access to the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
- Further, the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail, which has sections under construction, will ultimately connect the Village of Cold Spring to the Beacon Train Station. There are several other trail projects at various stages of development that will interconnect with these trails and provide a significant trail system throughout the Hudson River Valley and beyond. The Fishkill River Trail is a small piece of a very large and extensive, ongoing trail network.
